Bardsey Abbey and all the lands belonging to it including the island itself and much of the adjacent mainland is confiscated by the Crown in 1537, as part of a great suppression of monasticism throughout Wales and England. In 1549, the island is passed to John Wyn ap Huw of Bodfel, who it is said used the island as a base for pirates, and to store the pirated goods which were then sent on for sale at Chester.
