Departing from Porth Meudwy, Aberdaron. 2 to 2.5 hours
duration
A typical trip….
Cruise through Aberdaron Bay to view the old manganese mines at Porth Ysgo
and Rhiw, important for armour and munitions
manufacture during the two world wars. We then run past the Gwylan
Islands and up the coast to St Mary’s Well, departure point
for pilgrims crossing to Bardsey during
the
middle ages. Following in their wake we cross the sound to Bardsey, site
of St Mary’s Abbey from the sixth century ‘til 1537. Many features of the
abbey remain to this day, along with other historical features, from
Mesolithic era flints to the magnificent nineteenth century square
lighthouse. Binoculars and commentary are provided.
In practice specific history tours often become trips with an emphasis on
history but having many other aspects, as there is such a wealth of living
history, wildlife, geology and natural beauty around us.
